CARERS VISIT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Chairing the meeting of the European Parliaments Carers Interest Group, I was joined by 20 family carers from counties Sligo, Leitrim, Galway, Donegal and Roscommon as well as a panel that included John Dunne President of Eurocarers,  Frank Goodwin former President of Eurocarers and Fritz Von Nordheim, the European Commission Representative who is involved in preparing the EU work-life balance policy.

We heard from several of the Irish carers of the many difficulties faced by family carers and those they care for. These interest group meetings are  a very worthwhile way for the carers to engage with EU policy makers who, often, find EU legislation very far removed from their reality. Likewise listening to the carers and what they face in their daily life’s is a welcome and invaluable tool for us as policy makers.

Finally, I can say that I whole heartedly support the call from family carers Ireland to put the right to care in the home on the same footing as the statutory right to the fair deal. This I believe should be the main focus for 2017 in regard to our support for family carers.
