BRIEFING KEY BREXIT NEGOTIATOR
At the meeting, I impressed strongly on Mr. Verhofstadt the huge adverse effect which a hard border would have on the Republic’s economy and the common travel area as well as the implications for the ongoing peace process.
The implications of a hard border would be catastrophic for the border area and I was very encouraged by this meeting and the real understanding that Guy has of the Irish situation. I look forward to welcoming him to Ireland for discussions and meetings in 2017 after the triggering of Article 50 by the British.
I also sit on a special Brexit committee that looks at the implications for Employment and Social Affairs legislation and how this will affect the lives of ordinary people e.g. issues relating to pensions, to free movement, the working/travelling across the border etc.
