Trans fats better known as TFAs are added to many foods found on our supermarket shelves to make them more attractive for food producing purposes, as it enhances the flavour and shelf life of processed foods. However, broad scientific evidence shows that TFAs can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, infertility, endometriosis, gallstones, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity and some cancers.
Unfortunately, labelling measures only indicate whether or not the product contains TFA. Current legislation does not require the label to indicate the exact amount of TFAs in the product. I hope that this resolution will pave the way for a set of EU legislative limits on TFAs in our food.
This will be a positive step to enabling and encouraging consumers to make healthier food choices and ultimately live healthier lives. Remember we are what we eat! and the latest scientific assessment is that in moderation real butter is good for you- Connacht Gold which is real butter with half the fat removed and produced in my constituency is by definition, twice as good for you!
