POLICY MAKER AWARD
I have always worked to support efforts relating to neurological diseases. We set up the Brain, Mind, Pain Interest Group in the European Parliament many years ago to highlight the millions of people of all ages who struggle with neurological and chronic pain conditions. Many life-threatening diseases have been eradicated thanks to years of effort by physicians, scientists, and medical professionals investigating the causes of and potential treatments for disease, but the brain does not give up its secrets easily.

The brain is the origin of many disabling diseases including chronic pain, depression and neurodegenerative diseases that have a huge impact on the lives of people affected by them, as well as the healthcare systems that support them. It is crucial that the huge challenges posed by brain disorders are addressed through integrated, coordinated and co-operative efforts, both at the European and national level.

Most recently, our Interest group launched a Written Declaration focusing on rehabilitation and re integration of people with neurological and chronic pain conditions who may find it difficult to get or keep a job.  Unemployment and under-employment worsens the situation for patients by impacting their self-esteem, their mental health and by their increasing isolation. I am seeking to influence the EU agenda through all available channels.
